What are things people with ADHD struggle with?

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) symptoms can be split into two different categories: Inattention and Hyperactivity/Impulsivity

Examples of inattention include:

  • Struggling to pay attention or keep attention sustained at work, school or activities
  • Struggling to listen to take direction
  • Struggling to complete or stay focused on tasks
  • Struggling to focus on tasks that require a lot of mental energy
  • Struggling with forgetfulness or distraction

Examples of hyperactivity include:

  • Fidgeting of struggling to stay still
  • Struggling to relax or engage in activities quietly
  • Struggling with feeling like they are always on the go

Examples of impulsivity include:

  • Struggling with urges to talk excessively or blurt out answers
  • Struggling with intruding on others or waiting their turn

How can therapy help someone dealing with ADHD?

Therapy can help identify behaviors you would like to work on and help you to identify barriers to realizing your success. Therapy can also be helpful in learning to view tasks and focus through a neurodivergent/ADHD lens to make them feel more attainable and structured. Some people with ADHD also struggle with low self-esteem or anxiety about making mistakes, so therapy can be benefit to talk through these issues.

Do I need medication if I have Adult ADHD?

Some people can benefit from medication while others may find it to be unnecessary or unhelpful. It is also recommended when utilizing medication to do so in conjunction with therapy for best results. I always recommend clients utilize ADHD testing to identify how ADHD is impacting their functioning and psychiatric medication evaluation when deciding if medication is right for them.

What are the top 3 life hacks for adults with ADHD?

1. Be patient with yourself!

    • Learning to view life through an ADHD lens can be frustrating at times. It takes patience and kindness towards yourself in order to learn new methods in bettering your daily life.
    • Know that having ADHD can actually be a strength!

2. Develop a healthy routine.

    • I always recommend clients start with building a routine that you feel comfortable with it. Sometimes habits can be harder to build for folks with ADHD, so finding a way to remember tasks, appointments and commitments is key. A perfect routine may not be easy, but consistency vs. perfection is often a great step. Additionally, routines can be helpful in navigating task paralysis or the feeling of having so many things to do that it feels impossible to start.

3. Break down your tasks into smaller pieces.

    • Don’t be afraid to break up your tasks into smaller pieces! Starting with small, achievable goals can be very helpful in building helpful habits while also building your confidence in your own abilities!

I hope that these tips can help you kickstart your journey in managing ADHD! I am also accepting clients who are ready to get the support they need to feel in control of their lives and symptoms!
